Once known as Worsham Distilling, Peerless has set up shop in downtown Louisville KY.  If you stop by, be sure to visit the costume shop across the street, it’s worth the entertainment!  Rumor has it, Peerless had a leaking barrel, and so they dumped the bourbon into another new barrel.  The result was so good that they decided to make their Double Oak line a recurring product.

Nose: Dark chocolate espresso, caramel, cinnamon, oak. This the big daddy of Double Oak.  The term double oak scares me sometimes.  I have had over-oaked, bitter, and just plain old poor bourbon with this name on it.  But done right, like 1910 or Sagamore DO Rye, it is very nice.  The nose on this suggests it is going to be strong and amazing.

Palate: Sweet tobacco, oak, really, really good oak. Cinnamon and some cellar funk. Caramel and butter swim around. Very creamy. You better like Double Oaks.  And if you do, you will love this.  If oak is your thing, I highly recommend this.

Finish: Cinnamon and oak loiter around. Tons of oak flavor without the tannin bitterness.  Finish lasts for a long time, thankfully.

Final note: The proof on this seems very intentional.  It seems perfect, carrying flavors very well, offering a gentle punch while still enjoyable to sip.  I try to keep my reviews on whiskey, but once in a while I find a cigar-whiskey pairing that deserves attention.  I tasted this with a Diesel Vintage.  This maduro wrapped Toro has some cocoa and hazelnut notes that blended with the oak very nicely.  Together I found this slight licorice note that I enjoyed.  If you like to pair these two vices up, I suggest you try it!
