I bought this when a salesman assured me that this will be the “next everyday bourbon”. He said it wasn’t the best in the world, but it is so solid and enjoyable, it will be at the front of everyone’s bar. I have had this for a while, and put it through extensive testing….let’s see how it holds up.
Founded in 1885, the famed Green River was the tenth oldest distillery in KY. Green River is a recent acquisition by Bardstown. It became O.Z. Taylor, one of those companies that tried to speed up the aging process with ultrasonics. Simply put, it didn’t work. The name is now owned by Bardstown, and they are aging whiskey the proper way.
Nose: A very pleasant corn note, sweet corn. A light caramel, melted brown sugar. It is a very classic and powerful bourbon note, yet with very soft edges, nothing bites you. With some air I begin to pick up some freshly sawn white oak.
Palate: Little ethanol sharpness at first, then eases into Goetze caramel cremes. Pecan pie, slight cinnamon. Slight vegetal note hides in the back.
Finish: Short finish, that vegetal, herbal note comes to the front as it finishes. The middle of this tasting experience is absolutely the best, with the initial sip and finish being somewhat less than desired.
Final Note: I bought this a year ago. Rumor has it that this blend has improved since then. It is not bad, in fact I think it is a very decent every day drinker. However, EW BiB is half the price, and twice as good.
