Old Elk Cigar Cut is made by the same man that founded Otterbox.  While they do source from MGP (Not the otterboxes), they are not buying up old stock, they are having MGP make a unique mashbill just for them.  Doesn’t hurt that Greg Metze, their Master Distiller, was previously the MD at MGP.  A six year old whiskey that is then split into lots, finished in Port, Sherry, Cognac and Armagnac casks.  Designed to pair with your favorite cigar, or simply a delicious stand alone nightcap.

Nose: Grape Pie (It’s a NY thing), grass, malt, light caramel. The finishes on this whiskey really shine. It is so fruity and jammy, but doesn’t lose its bourbon identity.

Palate: Malt balls, grape jam, sweet leather.  The high rye bourbon is the backbone of this, but the finishes are the real stars. This is done masterfully, and comes together very well. Quite good

Finish: Oak, thick Welch’s grape juice.

Final note:  Each sip of this reminds me of scotch for about two seconds.  Perhaps it’s the Sherry influence.  This is a delightful bourbon, fruity, grapey and full flavored.  Pairs nicely with a cigar, and works well as a dessert pour.  For a young whiskey, this is quite nice.  Each sip offers something new to explore.  I highly recommend this.
